Origin And Journey

Birth and Origins

I was born into a traditional Maithil Brahmin family in Darbhanga, one of Bihar’s oldest and culturally richest cities. Nestled in the heart of Mithilanchal, Darbhanga is a land that echoes the timeless stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Its history, depth, and artistic heritage shaped the early rhythms of my upbringing.

Although my birthplace was Darbhanga, my ancestral roots lie in Baragaon in the Madhubani district—known for its world-famous Mithila art. Several generations ago, my forefathers relocated to Bhagnocha village in Mahnar block of Vaishali district, a region steeped in ancient glory. Vaishali, celebrated in Hindu epics as well as in Buddhist and Jain traditions, is not just a geographic origin for my family—it is a symbol of India’s intellectual and spiritual legacy.

The Onward Journey

My father, Late Shri Ishwar Chandra Thakur, served in the Bihar Administrative Service, a role that came with frequent transfers. This meant that every three years on average, our family moved to a new town—each with its own flavour, culture, and lessons.

My childhood unfolded across cities such as Samastipur, Basukinath, Deogarh, Giridih, and Ranchi. These early experiences taught me adaptability, curiosity, and the value of connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.

In 1986, I moved to Delhi, marking a turning point in my educational journey and exposure to a larger world. Yet, Bihar always remained close to my heart. I continued visiting my father wherever he was posted—Jamui, Bhagalpur, and Patna—until Patna became home after his retirement.

Patna—ancient Pataliputra—bears the legacy of some of India’s greatest empires: the Mauryas, Guptas, Nandas, and Palas. Growing up around such deep-rooted history instilled in me a sense of cultural continuity and intellectual responsibility.
